President Claudia Sheinbaum shared that the inauguration of the Buenavista — AIFA train, scheduled for Holy Week, is being delayed by a few weeks as military engineers from the Ministry of National Defense continue to conduct operational tests. 'They have already told me it will be delayed because the tests are still ongoing and certification has not been issued. The inauguration will be delayed by a few weeks because we want it to be certified so it can operate,' Sheinbaum clarified. From the National Palace, the head of state commented that she does not yet have an exact date for the inauguration of this railway section, but she assured that this project will be inaugurated in the coming days. 'They are about to give me the date, but it will be inaugurated in a few days,' she responded to press questions in the Treasury Hall. What certifications does the AIFA train need? According to official reports, the Buenavista — AIFA train is in its final phase to begin operations, which is why the Federal Government estimated that the project would start operations in the first half of the year, targeting the Holy Week vacation period. Therefore, military engineers are conducting technical and safety tests on the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management) system, which is essential for the integration of the signaling and automatic protection system, crucial for operational safety certification. Likewise, this railway project aims to reduce travel time between Mexico City and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) to 40-50 minutes, with a train departing every 15 minutes on average. Meanwhile, the project also aims to not only streamline daily mobility in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico but also to assist with tourist travel during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For this, 10 trains will be used, each with a capacity for 179 people.
